Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

​The Wolf Creek Primary Care Network is pleased to offer educational opportunities for persons with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).  In a series of three classes held over three weeks, participants will learn about this condition as well as methods for self-management.  The course outline is as follows:

Day 1

  • Participant's expectations for the learning sessions.

  • Lung anatomy and self-cleaning mechanism of airways.

  • Understanding COPD:  main cause, definition, pathphysiolgy and symptoms.

  • Impact of COPD.

  • COPD Medication including Prednisone, antibiotics and oxygen.

  • Inhalation devices.

Day 2

  • Prevention and recognition of exacerbations.

  • Plan of Action and management of respiratory infections.

  • Management of aggravating environmental factors.

  • Managing shortness of breath, pursed lip breathing, body positions.

  • Coughing techniques.


Day 3

  • Anxiety-breathlessness cycle.

  • Management of stress and anxiety.

  • Fatigue and energy conservation principles.

  • Nutrition.

  • Healthy life habits:  sleep, sex, leisure. Home exercies and stretches.

  • Goal making.
